Gas Mark 1 was founded in 1993 by two ex-British Gas engineers and school friends, Tony Vico and John Henderson. They still carry out the surveys and site consultations, to give you peace of mind you are receiving experienced, free, impartial advice on what is best for you. They also quality control our installation work so you can ensure that our high standards are maintained on every job carried out. Having started work in the gas industry in 1982 as an apprentice I qualified 3 years later winning National Apprentice of the year! At the age of 28 John and myself started Gas Mark 1 and together we have built the business by doing our best to give our customers a great experience. By adopting this attitude we have thousands of repeat customers, a foundation to our business. It will still be me visiting you at home to quote for boiler and bathroom installations, while I continue to mentor the team and grow the company.

John Henderson

As co founder of Gas mark 1 I am still a Gas safe registered engineer who spends a lot of time designing and overseeing the more technical work including designing larger heating systems with multiple boilers, underfloor heating and in some cases air source Heat Pumps. As the technical director I will quality control work with site visits, often helping the engineers out. Away from work I am a keen Watford football fan who has been a season ticket holder for more than 40 years.

I have been working at Gas Mark 1 for 5 years and have completed the plumbing and heating course at West Herts College. Through my apprenticeship worked alongside senior engineer Tom H on big site jobs, doing underfloor heating and some air source heat pump installations.

I have been in the plumbing and gas industry for 40 years. I went from being self-employed to working full time with Gas Mark 1 over 21 years ago. My role here is service and maintenance, I specialise in diagnostics of gas appliances, all types of heating, plumbing issues and repairs, including Warm Air Units.

Jamie has been with Gas Mark 1 and Herts Bathrooms and Kitchens for over 20 years, bringing a wealth of experience across multiple roles. He began as a bathroom salesman, moved into kitchen design, and later became an installer—where his practical skills and keen eye for detail truly stand out. Jamie particularly enjoys bringing new bathroom and kitchen designs to life, seeing each project through from concept to completion.

I have worked for Gas Mark 1 since I left school in 2013. This allowed me to complete my apprenticeship with the company.

My current role in the company is part of the kitchen installation team. I can also adapt and work on bathroom installations or maintenance jobs where needed.

I have worked for Gas Mark 1 for 17 years, starting out as an apprentice and now working as a senior engineer. I take on all aspects of plumbing and heating work but also really enjoy training our new apprentices, guiding them through their qualifications. I have experience managing larger projects for Gas Mark 1, which has led me to having more involvement in leading the team.

In 2018 I joined Gas Mark 1 as an apprentice and have been gaining hands on experience ever since. I’m specialise in domestic gas and system fault finding, developing the skills needed to diagnose and resolve heating and plumbing issues efficiently. Passionate about delivering quality service I’m committed to continuous learning and staying up to date with the latest industry standards.

I joined Gas Mark 1 as an apprentice in 2013 and since then I have experienced all aspects of the plumbing and gas work involved in what we do. After completing my apprenticeship. I chose to pursue the maintenance and fault-finding side which includes breakdowns and servicing, and more recently the electrical side to heating systems. I enjoy the maintenance side of the job as I feel there is something new every day.

I started at the company in 1998 and did my apprenticeship here, becoming a fully qualified engineer in 2003. John and Tony have known me since I was 15 as I was so impressed by all the pipe work Gas Mark 1 did when they installed a boiler at my parents house I did my work experience with them! This helped put the company on the map for other kids in the area to come and have a go, some have also become apprentices and even now fully qualified gas safe colleges.

I mainly work as a central heating installation engineer but also do fault finding and gas appliance servicing.

Day-to-day, Dean helps ensure that products move smoothly from the showroom to their destination, coordinating closely with deliveries while keeping communication clear and consistent.

Sarah works part time for Herts Bathrooms and Kitchens, and you’ll find her in the showroom on Thursdays and Fridays, where she plays an important role in supporting both customers and the wider team. Friendly and approachable, she is often one of the first points of contact, helping to ensure enquiries are handled efficiently and professionally.

William is our dedicated delivery driver at Herts Bathrooms and Kitchens, responsible for ensuring every order arrives safely and on time. As a key part of the team, he plays an important role in the installation stage of each project, helping to keep things running smoothly.

Will works closely with colleagues across the business, liaising with the showroom team, warehouse staff, and engineers on site to coordinate deliveries efficiently and ensure everything is exactly where it needs to be, when it needs to be.

I have worked at Gas Mark 1 for over 23 years, starting as a plumbing apprentice. After completing my course I specialised in bathroom installation until a new role in kitchen installation arouse which I took on. I have now progressed to surveying jobs and supervising the team of engineers.

I started in 2003 as office admin, supporting Russell who mentored me. Over time I learnt customer service as a valuable skill. I deal with booking in work and sourcing and secure spares for gas appliances, prioritising getting customer’s up and running when their fires, boilers, cookers break down.

I took a special interest in learning about the fires from Steve, who established the company, and enjoyed the interaction with customer and learning about new products, staying up to date with industry developments. During my time working for Gas Mark 1 I have built up relationships with manufactures producing gas and electric fires, working closely with Darren Smith who is our specialist gas fire installation engineer, and I became the fire showroom manager in 2018.

In 2024 I took over as office manager, leading a small team of friendly customer service administrators working together to deliver great customer service and support the engineers.

In December 2025 I will have been working for Gas Mark 1 for 25 years. I have helped Tony and John to build the company, specifically in recruiting the excellent team of staff we have now.

I trained as a gas engineer with British Gas, starting my apprenticeship with them on the same day as John Henderson. My background enables me to offer some technical help to customers over the phone and to my colleagues in the office.

I manage the apprenticeship scheme here at Gas Mark 1, and I am proud to say many of the apprentices, who are now fully trained engineers, were signed up by me.

More recently I have taken on the role of managing the stores and take the lead on the purchasing of all goods required for the gas engineers through our suppliers.

I started with Herts Bathrooms in 2001 in the warehouse and as a delivery driver, transporting goods from our yard out to site. I left for a short period of time and then returned to the business to work in the bathroom show room. I started learning about the kitchen goods and the fires and then moved downstairs to work in the office for Gas Mark 1. I spent some time out on the tools assisting the engineers’ installing bathrooms but mainly kitchens. Now I manage the projects, booking the engineers and contractors and liaising with the customers, providing updates and solving issues as they arise, my experience in lots of areas of this company is very valuable in my current role.

I joined Gas Mark 1 in 2018 as an Accounts Administrative Executive, in which I was pleased to join a thriving friendly office team. My key role is to manage invoices, reviewing & chasing weekly debtors, taking customer service calls to book jobs, and collating weekly bathroom/kitchen projects to provide to customers and engineers.

I also regularly liaise with our internal Accounts team to resolve any month end payment reconciliation queries.

Furthermore, I also managed our project to upgrade to a paperless digital job sheet system to allow engineers to efficiently record their day-to-day work and the office to manage invoices via our accounting system. This included taking it from stages of planning, testing and finalisation with our software developer team.

In 2022 I joined Gas Mark 1 as part of the wonderful office team. Specialising in organisation and administration I support the business by answering queries, booking in jobs for the engineers and arranging contractors where needed. I also manage the marketing and social media for the company, support Russell with apprentice administration and assist Gavin with the project management.

All of our work is carried out by highly qualified experienced engineers, with all gas work being undertaken by fully qualified Gas Safe accredited engineers.

At Gas Mark 1 pride ourselves on our in-house apprenticeship scheme. We work closely with local colleges to make sure that our apprentices are developing to the best of their capabilities in order to maximise their potential, we have been recruiting young apprentices for over 20 years, many of whom remain in our employment!

We believe training apprentices is one of the most important aspects of our business, as our development program ensures we can produce high quality engineers and develop individuals you’ll be happy to have in your home.
